DAVID “WAGGA” HUNT SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION OVERVIEW
The David “Wagga” Hunt Scholarship Foundation was established in 2009 to honor the legacy of the late David “Wagga” Hunt, a dedicated mentor and advocate for youth development. As a Kingston College (KC) alumnus and former football coach at Calabar High School, Hunt made significant contributions to both schools but is most notably recognized for leading Calabar High to Manning Cup victory in 2005, their first title in 28 years. Calabar went on to win the Olivier Shield that year as well.
David was also the co-founder of Meadhaven United Football Club and was recognized as a prominent sports analyst and administrator. His commitment to nurturing young talent and promoting education inspired the creation of this foundation, which seeks to continue his work by supporting students in their academic pursuits. David’s mantra “we can be rivals, not enemies” has forged a strong bond between both schools.
The foundation provides scholarships to deserving students at Kingston College and Calabar High School, covering their education expenses from Grade 8 through Grade 13. Scholarships were initially awarded to one recipient from each school for years 2009-2016, however, this was increased to two recipients in 2017 through to the current year. The organizations also increased the scholarship amount established in 2009, from J$100,000 per student, per year to J$150,000 in 2023. Since its inception, the Foundation has awarded 50 scholarships valued at J$26 million.
This financial support helps to defray the cost of tuition, books, lunch, and other school-related expenses, allowing recipients to focus on their studies and extracurricular activities. Candidates are selected from the Grade 7 cohort and selection is based on academic performance, participation in extracurricular activities, and financial need.
